Digital mesh networking
The Alberta Digital Radio Communications Society was formed in 2022 to promote the use digital communication in Amateur Radio. Our mission is to develop and deploy digital networks, using both currently available technologies and those that we develop ourselves.
Our first deployment was the Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (AREDN) mesh network in Western Canada, in the time since its inception it has grown from a single node to a network that spans the province, and includes the NW Territories, Eastern BC and parts of Northern Montana. The network is built on commercial wireless internet devices that have been re-purposed with different software.
The challenges of covering large distances with commercial equipment has brought us to launch the IP400 project, a new technology that extends the capabilities of digital networking by using purpose-built technology that operates in the amateur bands and can run at higher power, and has more suitable antenna types. Our first development was a proof of concept that will be further developed into a wide area network.
With the network in place, we have installed servers and have developed applications for digital repeater linking, gathering and disseminating weather and air quality information, repeater telemetry monitoring, as well as secure e-mail, a digital telephone network, and a portal to for Internet of Things devices.
Future developments on the network will be to deploy data modes at repeater sites that are linked on the network to enable transparent use of digital transmission modes, mobile data messaging, position reporting and mobile e-mail.
Nothing to report as of this date.
